he Chemistry Department provides 12 months of financial support to the student during each year of program tenure through a combination of teaching and research assistantships. Included in this support is payment of up to 10 credits of tuition each semester and full family health and dental insurance. Typical teaching assistantships are pay stipends (not including tuition or health insurance) of between $22,000 and $24,000. Several fellowships are available with stipends over $30,000. In addition we offer several housing allowances that pay $2,000 to defer the cost of housing during the first year of study. This generous support allows our student to concentrate on research and full-time study.
During the first year of study, most students are supported with a graduate teaching assistantship (GTA) or a competitive Rumble fellowship during the academic months (August - April) and a research assistantship during the summer (May - August). After the first year, financial support is generally provided by a combination of teaching assistantships, research assistantships, or fellowships, allowing students to concentrate on dissertation research. In addition, there are several interdisciplinary grants such as IGERT (Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training grants funded by the National Science Foundation) that provide support for chemistry graduate students in specific research areas.
Each year the Chemistry Department awards a select group of particularly outstanding applicants with non-teaching University Rumble Fellowships. All applicants are automatically considered for these fellowships. Recipients receive a generous stipend plus a housing allowance.
