Note from the Graduate Recruiting Chair

On behalf of our faculty I welcome you to the Graduate Admissions site of the Wayne State University Chemistry Department .

Wayne State University, which is located in the Cultural Center of Detroit, was founded in 1868 and became a state university in 1956. Recognized for the beauty and uniqueness of the architecture, the 120-acre main campus is accented by several malls, fountains and gardens. Adjoining the main campus is the Matthaei Physical Education and Recreation Building, surrounded by 42 acres of recreational and athletic facilities. As a major urban university, Wayne is the site of numerous conferences, lectures, seminars, films, exhibits, and concerts. At present, the University enrolls over 30,000 students in its fifteen schools and colleges.

The Chemistry Department awarded its first Ph.D. in 1948 and to date has granted nearly 1000 doctoral degrees. At present there are approximately 170 graduate students enrolled in our program.

At this site you will find materials that should provide you with an overview of the fine opportunities available for advanced study. Over the years our Department has earned a reputation for excellence, and we are able to provide an education in all of the traditional fields of chemistry as well as in interdisciplinary areas such as Biophysical, Bioinorganic, Bioorganic, and Organometallic chemistry. We are always interested in encouraging highly qualified students to apply for admission and to seek financial support in the form of teaching assistantships or fellowships. Essentially all graduate students who are enrolled on a full-time basis and working towards the Ph.D. are supported in one way or another by the Department. We would like to emphasize that summer support is provided so that our students may pursue research towards the Ph.D. degree on a twelve-month basis.

We encourage you to fill out and return the application forms directly to the Chemistry Department. If you have any questions regarding any aspects of the program, please do not hesitate to contact us, or any of our faculty. We hope to hear from you in the near future.
Sincerely,

Arthur Suits
